The Artist Archives Initiative was founded at New York University to promote research and disseminate knowledge about the display and care of contemporary art. The initiative responds to a growing need for art world professionals and academic researchers to work with artists in building information resources to aid future exhibition and re-activation of their work.

The focus is equally on the content of these resources and the software technology used to house the information. In addition to creating artist-specific resources, our aim is to stimulate discussion about variability and authenticity in the display of contemporary art through symposia, workshops, and publications.

Land Acknowledgment

The Joan Jonas Knowledge Base, hosted by New York University’s Fales Library and Special Collections, acknowledges that it is located on Lenapehoking, ancestral homelands of the Lenape people. We recognize the continued significance of these lands for Lenape nations past and present, we pay our respects to the ancestors, as well as to past, present, and emerging Lenape leaders. We also want to recognize that New York City has the largest urban Indigenous population in the United States. We believe that addressing structural Indigenous exclusion and erasure is critically important and we are committed to actively working to overcome the ongoing effects and realities of settler-colonialism within the institutions where we currently work.
