On July 22, 1990, Wojnarowicz flew to Santa Monica to help install Tongues of Flame. It was on view until September 5 of the same year. While there, religious rights activists continued to attack the piece. On August 29, 1990, the Rutherford Institute filed a lawsuit against the NEA's support for the piece. The case was eventually dismissed.
