Ed was Wojnarowicz's father, a retired seaman. He was an abusive and often absent figure in Wojnarowicz's life. He committed suicide in 1976, when Wojnarowicz was twenty-two. Wojnarowicz had only spent a few hours with him in the previous eleven years.
