Alanna Heiss founded P.S. 1 in 1971, as The Institute for Art and Urban Resources, Inc. In 1976, they took over a deserted school building in Queens, and became known as PS1. It became affiliated with the MoMA in January 2000. Wojnarowicz made his first unofficial showing here in 1982, when he released dozens of live cockroaches into a contemporary painting exhibition, an action he proudly included on his C.V..[1] On April 15, 1984, Wojnarowicz participated in Mike Bidlo's Factory show, playing Lou Reed.
