Joan Jonas Studio Archive
The JJKB has drawn materials primarily from the Joan Jonas Studio Archive, which is still in use and not publicly available, and includes materials gathered by Jonas beginning in the late 1960s until the present. These materials, which include notebooks, photographs, drawings, ephemera related to exhibitions and performances, and publications, are in active use as part of Jonas’s studio practice, and represent an accumulation of various materials related to her work collected by the artist and sent to her over the years. As of winter 2021, this personal archive is still in the process of being catalogued and inventoried by the artist and her studio staff. The JJKB has made a focused selection of materials from the studio archive related to the two artwork case studies and three exhibition case studies.
Institutional and Academic Archives
In addition, we have drawn on materials held by various institutional and academic archives and libraries around the world. We have provided the original archival source for each document included on the JJKB. We are grateful to all of the archives and institutions for their cooperation.
