Rehearsal Photographs

These photographs were taken around 1972 in Joan Jonas’s studio and show the drawings and props that Jonas used in the Organic Honey performances and videos, and offer a glimpse into Jonas’s studio practice at the time. Babette Mangolte’s photographs capture, in sumptuous detail, some of the Organic Honey props, costumes, and drawings, as well as a portrait of Jonas with her dog Sappho, posed next to the drawing of Sappho that appears in Organic Honey. Mangolte also photographed mirrors, photographs, and other Organic Honey materials as Jonas had them arranged in her studio. Richard Serra photographed Jonas in costume as Organic Honey for posters to publicize her performances. Carol Merseau documented a rehearsal of an Organic Honey performance in the studio, providing a rare view of the work in progress and Jonas’s process.
