Land Acknowledgment
The Joan Jonas Knowledge Base, hosted by New York University’s Fales Library and Special Collections, acknowledges that it is located on Lenapehoking, ancestral homelands of the Lenape people. We recognize the continued significance of these lands for Lenape nations past and present, we pay our respects to the ancestors, as well as to past, present, and emerging Lenape leaders. We also want to recognize that New York City has the largest urban Indigenous population in the United States. We believe that addressing structural Indigenous exclusion and erasure is critically important and we are committed to actively working to overcome the ongoing effects and realities of settler-colonialism within the institutions where we currently work.
Thank You
We thank the sixteen students and researchers who worked on the project and our thirteen project advisors. This team is too large to list individually here, but we would particularly like to thank Kristin Poor who served as Assistant Curatorial Research Director, Allison Kalb for the final design and concept of the WordPress site, and Lozana Rossenova who served as Assistant Linked Data Research Director. We also thank Emily Bates at Gavin Brown’s enterprise and Gladstone Gallery for her ongoing research support. Most of all, we would like to thank Joan Jonas and her studio, with special thanks to Sekeena Gavagan.
We are grateful to the interviewees for their generous participation. We also thank the photographers, institutions, authors, and publishers who generously provided permission for their work to be shared here.
We are grateful to Suzanne Deal Booth for her generosity in supporting our research and development of the Joan Jonas Knowledge Base. Additional funding was provided by the Center for Humanities (NYU), the NYU Arts Council, the Polansky Foundation Digital Humanities Internship Program (NYU), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Program (Canada), and the Faculté des Arts, Université du Québec à Montréal, Canada.
